About AllAboutGuitars.info
I've been playing guitar for over thirty years now, both in gigging bands and in studio projects. Nothing that ever sold a million albums or made me rich and famous, but it's been fun all the same.
I'm a Brit. Back in 1994 I attended the Musicians Institute, Los Angeles, USA, in between the second and third years of my degree back in Cambridge, England.
Being at the Musicians Institute was an awesome experience. The faculty staff there were mostly first-call session players with very impressive CVs (resumes) of who they've played or toured with.
I've owned many different guitars over the years. The first professional instrument I bought was a 1980 Gibson Les Paul Standard, in 'tobacco sunburst' finish. I was 17 when I bought that guitar. I sold it six years later, but I still know the serial number - it was 82520685. So if you own a Les Paul Standard with that serial number on the back of the headstock - hey that's the one that used to be mine!
I remember changing the machine heads for Schaller machines, but apart from that I didn't do anything else to it.
At present I have two Gibsons - a 1997 Gibson Les Paul Classic Plus, and a 1997 Gibson EDS1275 double neck 12/6 string. I put Gibson covers on the Les Paul humbuckers, and added a Gibson pickguard and plain black Gibson truss rod cover plate. On the Gibson EDS1275, I changed the neck pickup on the 12 string neck for a Dimarzio PAF classic.
I've gone through about 7 different Strats. The first one was a reissue of a '57 Strat, with the two-tone sunburst. The Strat I currently own is a 1996 Fender USA American Standard Stratocaster. I much prefer the fretboard radius of this compared to vintage Strats.
I've heavily customized the Strat. I took the neck off, removed the hardware, plugged the string-tree holes, shaved down the back of the neck, refinished the neck in an acrylic lacquer and fitted a set of Sperzel locking machines. I also ripped out the electrics, fitted two Seymour Duncan Hot Rails pickups and a JB jnr in the bridge position and rewired the circuitry.
My instrumental guitar based album 'Coded Constellations' is available on CD and as mp3s from GTR Music.
...is that life is not ultimately about guitars, music, or any of the other stuff we try to live for. The only choice you will ever make that ultimately matters is how you respond to the gospel.
