I've already introduced heptatonic scales and covered the minor heptatonic blues scale. On this page we'll look at the major heptatonic blues scale.
The intervals of the major heptatonic blues scale are as follows: major 2nd - minor 3rd - major 3rd - perfect 5th - minor 6th - major 6th - octave.
Here's the first position of the major heptatonic blues scale, in G major:
If you've studied what I've already covered regarding the major pentatonic scale for guitar and the two major hexatonic scales for guitar, then you'll recognise that the major heptatonic blues scale for guitar shown here includes and merges three other scales:
- The major pentatonic scale - notes in red and brown
- The major hexatonic minor 3rd scale - pentatonic plus notes in orange
- The major hexatonic minor 6 scale - pentatonic plus notes in blue
You should also be familiar with how, because of the relationship between every major key and its relative minor, the guitar fretboard shapes or fretboard patterns for the major heptatonic blues scale are identical to those of the minor heptatonic blues scale. The only difference is that the root notes are in different places.
This can be clearly seen by comparing the (first position) G major heptatonic blues scale for guitar shown above, with the (first position) E minor heptatonic blues scale for guitar shown below:
Here are the other positions of the G major heptatonic blues scale up the guitar neck:
